The N17 near Oshoek Border Post was the site of a highly successful Tourism Border Post and Truck Awareness Campaign today, led by District Executive Mayor Cllr Walter Mngomezulu, Commandant Life Mokoena of the Boarder Management Authority, and Executive Mayor Cllr Mbuso Magubane of Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality. This initiative, a joint collaboration, focused on improving border and road safety and addressing the increased traffic expected over the Easter holiday period.
A collaboration between the Border Management Authority, Gert Sibande District Municipality, Ehlanzeni District Municipality, Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality, the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, South African National Defence Force and other key partners, the campaign inspected over 100 vehicles, including heavy-load trucks. A total of 25 summons were issued for various traffic violations. One case of illegal immigration was discovered during the operation, with the necessary law enforcement actions taken in accordance with the law.
As the Easter holidays approach, road users were reminded to drive with caution, obey traffic laws, and ensure safety on the busy roads. Travelers were also encouraged to explore the diverse tourist attractions within the Gert Sibande District and were invited to visit the Gert Sibande Great Outdoors, a stunning destination for nature enthusiasts.
“We are pleased with the outcome of today’s campaign and the collaborative efforts of all involved in minimizing accidents and incidents, and we applaud the work done to ensure that law is enforced by travellers” said Executive Mayor Cllr Walter Mngomezulu. “With the upcoming holiday travel, we urge everyone to drive responsibly and take the time to explore the incredible attractions our district has to offer.”
This initiative underscores the continued efforts of local authorities and law enforcement to ensure the safety of both residents and traveller’s, fostering a secure and welcoming environment for all.
