Cllr MW Mngomezulu is the Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality Local government is in support of the National Development Plan 2030 which aims to provide quality education, skills development and innovation. In light of the fourth industrial revolution at hand, it is critical that as local government we correctly position ourselves for the economic growth and we are ready to contribute towards the developmental state we hope to become by 2030 and beyond. Skills shortages can easily hinder economic transformation and advancement. Local government requires technical skills which make big contribution to economic growth and are essential for the country to meet its challenges relating to infrastructure.

We encourage young people in the District to have in place career plans which are considerate of the growing urgency in both the private and public sectors to prioritise scarce skills. Government has provided various platforms and programmes to promote the production of scarce skills. We therefore encourage young people to grab these opportunities, not only for their personal benefit but also for the benefit of their District and the country at large. The liberation struggle by the freedom fighters was also for economic liberation and it is up to all of us, mostly the young people to ensure that the struggle and the sacrifices made were not in vain. Charity begins at home; consider joining the local government workforce in your career choices. Be the reason that more citizens in the country have access to basic services and a better life by making the relevant career choices.

Management

The Gert Sibande District Municipality employs a total of six (6) Section 54A and 56 Managers responsible for leading the six departments of the municipality. These are, the Municipal Manager, Chief Financial Officer, General Manager for Corporate Services, General Manager for Community and Social Services, General Manager for Infrastructure and Technical Services and also the General Manager for Planning, Economic Development and Innovation. The Section 54A and Section 56 Managers are employed on a fixed five (5) year employment contract and performance contract. Quarterly performance reviews and annual performance evaluations are conducted to monitor and evaluate the performance of the General Managers. The Executive Mayor oversees the performance of the Municipal Manager and the Municipal Manager oversees the performance of the General Managers
