Municipal Health & Environmental Services

The District Municipality through its strategic approach and in line with its powers and functions, provides Municipal Health Services [MHS] and Environmental Management Services [EMS]. The primary aim is to ensure that the community and any persons within Gert Sibande District municipality are living in a healthy and safe environment.

The communities and members of the public have access to the following Municipal Health Services:

(a) Water quality monitoring;

(b) Food control;

(c) Waste management;

(e) Surveillance and prevention of communicable diseases, excluding immunisations;

(f) Vector control;

(g) Environmental pollution control;

(h) Disposal of the dead; and

(i) Chemical safety,

The GSDM also provides support to the Local Municipalities. The key focus is on:

Community access to safe drinking water;

Community access to safe sanitation services;

Food safety with emphasis on preparation and distribution of food for sale to public;

Monitoring of medical and hazardous waste;

Minimisation and control of environmental pollution and environmental health risk;
