Contact UsGSDM has made significant progress on issues of planning and innovation. As per our commitment, GSDM has continued to assist all constituent local municipalities in terms of land use management through the Gert Sibande District Municipal Planning Tribunal. The scope includes the processing and approval or decline of land development applications. The Tribunal has been engaged in significant rezoning programmes which include 98 farms in Lekwa Local municipality to pave way for the development of a solar and wind generation project that promises to assist with the national energy crisis.
Young planning professionals have been deployed in different local municipalities within the Gert Sibande District to assist with shortage of skills in Town and Regional Planning as part of municipal support.
It is also our great pleasure to announce that we have successfully retained the approval of our Remote Piloted Aircraft Operating Certificate from the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). We remain the only local municipality in South Africa to achieve the feat to date. The municipality is therefore licenced to legally operate its fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) commonly known as Drones. We are planning to provide services to various clients within both the public and private sector.
Through our Innovation Unit, we continue to engage various stakeholders including funders and investors to realise the dream of developing the Gert Sibande Aerospace Industrial Hub. We are proud to report that the GSDM has signed a memorandum of agreement with the Motheo TVET College to partner in the introduction of aviation training programs in the TVET collage which will also be an enabler for the aircraft manufacturing precinct of the Aerospace Industrial Hub.

The Gert Sibande District Municipality has in place a mobile drone operation centre. The mobile office allows our drone unit to render services such as the provision of precision agricultural solutions, mapping services for municipalities, status quo monitoring during disasters and air quality monitoring across the district to mention a few. The vehicle has been customized in terms of suspension and capacity, making it suitable for travelling on different terrains. It is fitted with enough capability to power all its onboard gadgets with electricity for up to eight hours without running the vehicle engine and has all necessary office equipment to facilitate mobile operations.
The vision behind the establishment of the Aerospace Industrial hub is to be the lead centre for aerospace 4IR in the African continent.
The Aerospace Industrial Hub is located within the Gert Sibande District Municipality, in the sunny highveld of Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The region boasts major industries including the international chemical giant SASOL (South African Coal, Oil and Gas Company) and ESCOM (Electricity Supply Commission) the internationally acclaimed electricity generation utility company. Furthermore, the busiest freight line in Africa, the Transnet Coal link, which carries sixteen 250-wagons coal trains per week for the export market originates within this district. In addition, there a number of small engineering and manufacturing firms supporting.
ESKOM, SASOL and Transnet and other clients within the region. With the Gert Sibande Aerospace Industrial Hub, you are at home for all your Engineering and Manufacturing needs.
The Gert Sibande Aerospace Industrial Hub is positioned to drive the 4th industrial revolution in Aerospace. Boasting an Urban Air Mobility/Unmanned Aerial System Precinct, an Aircraft OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) precinct, a Space OEM Precinct and an Aerospace Institute incorporating an R&D (Research and Development) Centre and a SMME (Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise) Incubator, your Aerospace Research and Technology requirements are well taken care of.
Active and planned services of the Gert Sibande Aerospace Industrial Hub
Aircraft OEM Precinct
The Aircraft OEM Precinct consists of 6.2 hectares of allocated land with direct access to the runway and parking spaces. The aircraft OEM Precinct is designed to have easy access to the Aerospace Institute and the R&D and Aerospace Environmental Qualification Testing Centre.
Aerospace Institute
The Aerospace Institute, in partnership with local and international Aerospace Engineering Universities, will provide niche Aerospace Educational Programmes with skills that will be relevant to the skills requirements of the tenants of the Aerospace Industrial hub.
The RPAS Integration Open Laboratory
The RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) Integration Open Laboratory (RIOL) consists of a region surrounding the town of Ermelo, starting at the perimeter of Ermelo and stretching 50 km outwards. This dedicated area acts as an RPAS Integration into Civilian Airspace Testing Corridor. It takes advantage of the very low population density in this area, the flat terrain as well as low air traffic since air traffic flying in this area is .already flying above 21000 ft.
Space OEM Precinct
The Space OEM Precinct consists of 6.2 hectares of allocated land with direct access to the runway as well as the railway line for the transportation of large structures such as rocket assemblies. The space OEM Precinct is designed to have easy access to the Aerospace Institute, the R&D and Aerospace Environmental Qualification Testing Centre.
Aerospace Environmental Qualification Testing Centre
This is a State-of-the-Art Testing facility linked to the Aerospace Institute providing Aerospace 00related Environmental Testing and Qualification facilities to be able to handle both Aeronautic and Space related environmental testing. The envisaged facilities include a Thermal Vacuum Chamber to handle up to a 4-ton communication satellite, an Anechoic Chamber, Vibration Facility as well as an Electronics and Software Qualification Laboratory to specifically test.
